The Luna Butterfly: Its Significance

The luna moth can be found in several habitats across the United States, Canada, Mexico & Central America. Their wings are pale green with a distinct pattern (eyes) that span over 3 inches; making them one of the largest moths in North America.  They don’t have mouths to eat & store all their energy as a caterpillar; this makes their lifespan 7-10 days. Their nocturnal habits make them rarely seen.

Luna moths are special and carry meaning & symbolism:

Renewal:  a fresh start or feeling energized

Regeneration: hope and inspiration

Lightness and positivity: their green color can make people feel good

Spirituality: spiritual growth and enlightenment

Intuition: can help guide people

Healing: represent the body’s ability to heal

Rarity and beauty: their beautiful patterns remind us how we should value & appreciate unique things

Moon’s phases: life, death, & rebirth cycles

From Idea to Reality: Evolution of the Luna Babies Foundation

Working in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and assisting families through our Perinatal Hospice Program, we often encountered families grappling with concerns about affording their child’s burial expenses.

I vividly recall sitting with a grieving family shortly after their newborn had passed away, navigating the daunting process with the mortuary as they confronted various options and associated costs. The mother, overwhelmed with grief, tearfully expressed her inability to bear the financial burden. We explored alternatives to burial, but it was clear that laying her baby to rest in any other way was not what she desired.

In that moment, it became apparent of the need for change. No family should face such heart-wrenching decisions based on financial constraints. The stress of financial worries should not overshadow the precious time families have with their child or the memories they should be creating.

This was not an isolated incident. As we began to speak out, others shared similar experiences—whether through patient interactions or their own personal struggles with mortuary expenses.

From these experiences, the concept and establishment of Luna Babies arose, driven by the aspiration to not only ease the financial burden but also to offer unwavering support to families during the most heartbreaking moments of their lives.
